Kalmar FF suffered a 2–0 loss to Hammarby IF in Sunday’s home match, as manager Toni Koskela was publicly blasted by Henrik Rydström in a heated post-match exchange.
The team, now 12th in Allsvenskan with 13 points from 12 games (recent form LWLWL), had not a single shot on target during the entire 90 minutes. But it wasn’t the game’s flow that sparked Rydström’s fury.
What triggered the post-match explosion?
Rydström, who led Hammarby to victory, exploded particularly in the final quarter. After bringing on Montader Madjed late in the game, he yelled at Kalmar FF’s players—and at Koskela.
– The last 20 minutes, we’re inviting them in in a way I have to address with the players. We fix it now, but a better team would’ve scored 2–1 here, Rydström said. He added that such play wouldn’t work in Europe—or even in Allsvenskan.
When Madjed was later interviewed, he noted: It’s been a long time since I saw a coach so angry. Rydström laughed and admitted he also yelled at Koskela, without giving a clear explanation.
Why was Koskela targeted?
Rydström argued that Kalmar FF’s players lacked ambition and hunger despite leading 2–0. He emphasized that a team must enjoy a lead all the way, especially in front of home fans.
– It’s a luxury frustration, but I’m very pleased with the performance, he concluded. Meanwhile, Kalmar FF’s poor defensive record (14 goals scored, 17 conceded) signals a need for improvement.
What’s next for Kalmar FF?
The team now faces a crucial match against Halmstad (16th) on August 29. With 19 points behind leaders Sirius and a negative goal difference (-3), Kalmar must quickly regain momentum.
Rydström’s outburst highlights Hammarby’s mental resilience, but Koskela and his players must absorb the criticism and prove they can handle pressure—especially in home games.
